When it arrives to scrap steel, Hogansville, Ga-dependent artist Leah Jeffery has honed an instinct for transforming outdated bicycle pieces, cutlery, and offcuts into a fascinating menagerie of expressive animals. During her senior yr of significant faculty, she commenced discovering distinct trades, and right after signing up for a welding course, discovered a purely natural skill with metalworking. She turned fascinated in re-applying discarded materials, and her to start with undertaking was a great horned owl, which spurred an ongoing series portraying an array of wildlife.
Now operating as Bruised Reed Studio, her practice centers all around the proverbial turning of trash into treasure. “There is a little something about getting what was discarded and providing it new life,” she says. “I use any scrap metallic I can find—mostly old bicycle pieces and flatware, or men and women will give me their random metal junk.” Every single sculpture is 1-of-a-variety, formed from in a vast assortment of textures, densities, and patinas to expressively seize an eagle’s intensive gaze, a butterfly’s wings, or a sloth’s lazy grin.
