Mark Gomes: Open Studio, with its emphasis on audience participation and inclusivity, shares an ethos with your operate, a good deal of which has been created for public areas and works by using language to investigate how indicating is made and shared. Does your Open Studio challenge aim to hook up people in a related way?
Sebastian Moody: To get started with, I want to be aware that I labored as a Gallery and Customer Solutions Officer at QAGOMA just about 20 a long time back, and it is genuinely awesome to be back. When doing the job at the Gallery — observing individuals seeking at art and wondering about what art is — I realised every person comes to art with what’s now going on in their very own heads. For me, art’s normally been a way to get men and women try to recognize how those people ideas entered their heads in the first area. In this way, I assume my function sits strongly in the tradition of classic, 1960s ‘capital C’ Conceptual Artwork. What I’m striving to do is get individuals to imagine about how they make their aesthetic selections, how they interpret is effective of artwork.

MG: Are there distinct artists performing in this vein you had been drawn to while researching in the QAGOMA Research Library and discovering the Collection for your Open up Studio task?
SM: There are two primary artists. The first is the Swede Bengt af Klintberg and his Orange celebration of 1963, which I very first keep in mind looking at on show at QAG when I was 17 or 18 in the Fluxus exhibition, ‘Francesco Conz and the Intermedia Avant-Garde’ (1997–98). It is essentially an educational get the job done for peeling an orange and lining all the parts up in a row: in other text, transforming a sphere into a line. I definitely like the easy poetry of it. A large amount of Klintberg’s operates have uncomplicated instructions that, when you study them, you type of accomplish in your intellect. Which to me is what Conceptual Art need to do. You really do not want to make big general public artworks — which is what write-up-conceptualism is, when Conceptual Art was presented a funds. Genuinely, it is adequate to only imagine about these items.
The 2nd artist is Alison Knowles, who labored in New York and was a founding member of Fluxus. She has a large amount of tutorial performs, too, that illustrate what I necessarily mean. I feel, essentially, Fluxus was hoping to exhibit you that you could be an artist. That, to me, is inspirational. I imagine we’ve shed that punk, emancipatory mind-set, and it is time to renew it. Right now, Fluxus artworks are revered in guides, but do they stand up when you truly adhere to by means of their instructions? Open Studio is a superior excuse for me to share these Conceptual artworks from the QAGOMA Selection with audiences, have them adhere to the recommendations and encourage an any individual-can-do-it attitude. Like the Fluxus artists, I am fascinated in means of producing artwork the place, as the author, I do not have to be dependable for the work — the viewers is.
